Day 15 - What are a character’s bad habits?
Pascal is incredibly messy. It doesn’t have anything to do anything with his condition - it’s not because he can’t do something, it’s because he doesn’t want to bother. When he doesn’t need an object he just places it somewhere around and completely forgets about it until the next time he needs it. In a way, it’s a sort of order, I guess. You never lose anything, you’re just constantly drifting in a space of forgotten and abandoned objects, making it very annoying for other people around you.
That and he drinks way too much coffee.
Day 14 - What is a character’s biggest regret?
Pascal’s biggest regret (and also biggest nightmare) has a name – Nevlabs. It’s the place where he worked before he came to ERF. Everything there was a disaster and it ended up as a big industrial disaster as well. Pascal regrets he ever worked there and regrets how he acted when he worked there. He tries to forget about it but it keeps haunting him, like one of those things that haunt you as a reminder that they made you a stronger person. Except Pascal had more that enough of “becoming a stronger person” and thinks it’s rubbish. It’s possibly the only bit of his biography he won’t voluntarily talk about. He still hasn’t come to terms with it.
Day 13 - What kind of foods are popular in the setting?
Snack food! Seriously, ERF scientists work too much so they eat too much snacks because cooking properly is too distracting.
Day 12 - How does a character comfort themselves?
For Pascal the best possible way to lift his mood is to get a good book. Or some good music. Or possibly both and screw whatever is going on outside for the next couple of hours.
The 30 Day Original Story Development Challenge is baaaaack! I’ll try to finish it before the summer is over.
Day 11 - What kind of people show up in the background in your world?
Trivially True mostly happens in our world so the people in the background can be pretty much anyone who happen to be in Vancouver. However, since most of the story takes place near a scientific facility a lot of random characters either have something to do with science or are just used to live among the scientists.
From Pascal’s point of view random people are annoying – they either stare or avoid looking him in the eyes (or both). He feels uncomfortable in public places and would rather be alone or with friends who don’t judge the book by its cover.
I wanted to tackle drawing Pascal yesterday because his poses are the hardest. So I took an old TT story draft and drew him saying his lines. And then I drew more random poses and expressions. I think I’ll continue doing it (so you can expect more posts like this) but I like what I got so far.
Also now is a good time to ask Pascal questions. Since I’m drawing him talking anyway.
Feel kind of like stuff yelling and exploding inside your head, doesn’t it?
Hey, Keener! Let’s go to the zoo!
Keener dislikes zoos for various reasons.
I’m still doing the 30 Days Original Story Development Meme from time to time.
Day 10 - Your character when they were young(er)
Here we go - young Pascal with his family (not pictured: Louise’s second husband and Pascal’s stepfather) and then teenage Pascal.
He had an uneasy childhood but he wouldn’t call it terrible. In fact, he’d probably choose the word “passable”.
Thing is, Amy isn’t permanently cheerful. She’s cheerful around friends, which is the situation you see her most often in. But she is human and she can be tired, and irritated, and angry. She used to yell at Keener because of his crude sense of humor and she’s ready to yell at anyone who mistreats anyone. You don’t want to cross angry Amy.
You just don’t get to see that side of her that often.
